Tooting Market have a creative event every month where they invite artists to create something within the space. An installation or a shop or a piece of performance. I was approached to pitch an idea.
I worked with Print based artist Kate Innes and documentary film-make Henry Fraser to create a submersive installation which really tapped into peoples inner child. Monster build grew came from Kat’es Monster Alphabet and my obsession with art involving everyone. So we ordered sheet after sheet of cardboard and pot after pot of poster paint and set about making both a monster backdrop but also a monster body whop where we would invite people to choose a pair of hands, a pair of feet, a monster head , a monster robe and not forgetting the crucial monster weapon. In pairs on in teams people could then take photos or get filmed and it became a really fun way to engage with people. Monster Build turned swiftly into Monster Party but we thought that was quite brilliant too.
